Club Longbow in Town
We now have a club longbow, kindly crafted and donated by Rob Gooch (we wonder how much of his garden decking area he has left!). It's a low poundage bow, ideal for beginners, so if you're interested in having a go with a 'proper' bow then please contact one of the current longbowers for a free trial.

£176 Raised for Charity Event
A thank you to our volunteers who helped out at the Treetops Hospice Great Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday 19th April.
It was an early start of 8am to get ourselves down to the club ground, load up our cars and then make our way over to the Treetops Hospice.
The weather wasn't perfect but the rain kept off which meant we did get a lot of people who wanted to try their hand at archery.
Anchor Bowmen raised £176 for the Hospice which is fantastic news given we were only charging £2 per 6 arrows, so you can imagine we did get busy but the team coped admirably given we only had 4 hours to operate our stall.
Great work team!

A big thankyou to everybody who attended the AGM this year which was held at "The Bank" in Spondon last Monday night, 2nd Dec.
The meeting went very smoothly and several issues were tackled. There will be some new faces on the committee and we wish them well in carrying out their respective roles. Many thanks to all those who decided to stand down and who helped in the running of the club during the last few years.
Well done to all the trophy winners. Lets hope next year will see more trophy winners and the club will continue to move in the right direction. Remember that every member counts!

Our Most Senior and Respected Member
Recently an old magazine cutting was rediscovered from 2003 featuring our most senior and respected member, Tom Knott.
Back in 1953 Tom shot in the GNAM tournament when they were celebrating 100 years of formation. He shot there nearly every year afterwards and in 2003 he was there at their 150th event as both an archer and honoured guest.
Tom once said, "Its not just the target you are shooting at that is important, it's also the people that you are shooting with."

Good Times had at the August Fun Shoot
Last sunday saw the welcome return of ABAC's funshoot. Not so many people turned out as expected (maybe it was the Olympics!) but those that did had a great time, entering the spirit of the day by wearing fancy dress for the theme of "Kings and Queens".
Jelly bows and joker rounds ensured a good level of fairness with team play being the order of proceeding... and with raffle prizes and awards for both winners and losers, all thoroughly enjoyed the day.

News from the Annual General Meeting
ABAC held it's Annual General Meeting at the Stanhope Arms, Stanton-By-Dale last night. It was a well attended meeting with lots of club members and some family members packing out this cosy venue. The previous committee members voiced their end of year reports and acting Chair, Barrie Monk also paid tribute to two members who had passed away this year; Harvey Harrison and Richard Bradley. Both, like a gold at 100 yards will be sadly missed by many.
Following the voting in of the new committee, with a few new faces taking up the challenge for the first time, the excellent buffet was then polished off before lots of applause given to the deserving few as they collected various trophies, classification medals and club badges. Well done ABAC on another succesful and rewarding years shooting!

Results from our 24th Annual Open Western Shoot
Warm, dry, calm, bright but overcast. These were the conditions for Anchor’s 24th Open Shoot that was shot at the Asterdale on the Graham Street Prims football ground on Sunday 8th August.
Forty archers competed at the friendly Western that started with sighters at 1pm. Entries included a good mix of ladies, gents and juniors shooting Longbow, recurve and compound.
After shooting was complete the raffle was drawn, with lots of bottles, whilst archers enjoyed tea and cake during the wait for results. Our Lady Paramount, Lesley Ray presented an array of Trophies, Medals and Prizes to the more successful shooters (and one who won the prize for Worst Black !).
All thanks to our Tournament Organiser Mick Simpson and the ever present field party.

DAC's Open Windsor was a Breeze!
The Derby Archery Club Open Windsor on the 25th July 2010 was well attended by a number of Archery clubs from across the Midlands. There was a notable gathering of Longbow archers this time adding their presence to the tournament on the Great Lawn at Kedleston Hall. The shoot opened at 60yds in glorious sunshine but with a steady breeze which was both welcoming for its cooling affect on the archers and cursed at the same time because of its affect on the arrows. An hours break followed the 60yds giving time for the archers to chat, drink, and catch up with old friends.
By the time the shoot resumed at 50yds the sky had clouded over and the breeze had picked up and was continually changing direction and strength making the tournament more challenging. The change in conditions did not spoil the enjoyment of the day for the archers or the large audience of National Trust visitors who stopped to watch the action.
Unfortunately there were no medals for Anchor Bowmen, our nearest results were a 4th position in the Gents Recurve by Dave Coupland, a 5th position in the Ladies Recurve for Lesley Ray and a 5th position for Harvey Harrison in the Gents Longbow. Well done to them. We did have a result in the raffle though with Dave winning a wind up torch, nice one Dave.
Many thanks to DAC for running this Tournament. Hope to see more Anchor Bowmen at this enjoyable shoot next year.

Enjoyable DAC National Open
Eight of our members attended the DAC Open National Shoot on 2/5/10 which was held on the Great Lawn at Kedleston Hall. It was a threateningly overcast day which was very cold and gave a challengingly varied wind direction and strength. However despite a brief sprinkle of rain it remained dry. Sadly no medals were won by any of our members, our nearest positions were a 5th place in the Ladies Recurve for Lesley Ray, a 5th place for Harvey Harrison in the Longbow and an 8th place for Derrick Conway in the Mens Recurve. However this did not stop us having an enjoyable shoot and our thanks go to DAC for running it!

Our Spring Beginner's Course ended tonight with a fun competition shoot. Both beginners and existing club archers shot a few rounds of arrows. Fun had by all. Thanks to all those that took part and helped out during the night and throughout the 6 weeks course. Here's hoping that we see some new members signing up soon!!
